how to tell exporter to disable lighting

I'm writing an exporter to export from 3ds max (and other 3d tools) and have some issues with translating material parameters to opengl commands. Some objects in the scene will have lighting disabled. Unfortunately no specific parameter for this exists. So I could handle this two ways: 1) If the exporter sees a self-illumination colour of 100%, then it assumes lighting is disabled 2) The parameter is encoded in the name of the material (i.e. material01_no_lighting) What would the best way to do this?
