I just read manual for GNU Multiple Precision Library for the first time, in preparation for possible doing something with it. I was surprised to notice that I didn't see anything about basic functions like trigonometric functions and exponential function. Does this mean that if you use GMP, you need to program these function yourself?

You can use other libraries built on top of libgmp in order to get those functions. For example, MPFR, which is mentioned in the "Projects using GMP" section of the libgmp home page.
