Hi there, Im quite new to game design and new to these forums so hi everyone. I live in the UK (Scotland,Glasgow) I have been doing alot of research into different university degrees but i am unsure on: which type of degree would be best, and where the best degrees are. Type of degree: I am unsure whether i should take a specialist game design degree or should i just go for a more traditional computer science degree. I really want a career in game design but im not sure if im narrowing down my choices too much by taking a specific game design degree. Edit: I have removed all that other junk i wrote about different degrees. The only question i have now is really whether to take a more general degree such as CS or software engineering, or to take a gaming degree. If i was to take a CS degree then it would probably be at glasgow uni but there is a wide choice there If i was to take a game development type degree then im pretty sure i would go for the Computer Games Technology course at Abertay. It be good to hear from some past students that went to a similar course at Abertay to see how the course was and if they got jobs. So if you went to Abertay for a game development type degree then please i would like to hear from you! Thanks alot for your time. [Edited by - mick2009 on January 13, 2009 12:22:06 PM]

This topic is asked like every other day, so instead of regurgitating what has been said in other threads (and is going to be said again), I'm just going to say that you should thoroughly read Tom Sloper's Website. I'd also recommend you visit any of the universities that you are interested in and try to talk to some of the students and professors there.

Good luck in your pursuits, being a game designer is fun [wink]

Edit: jpetrie's link is a good read for you as well.

Thanks for those links guys they helped alot.
Is there anywhere that gives sort of review type things on universitys? Its just it would be good to get an opinion on some of the degrees by some past or current students.

Just search for the school you're interested in using this site's search feature. For example, if you search for "digipen" or "full sail", you're likely to pull up threads yielding more reading material than you could possibly finish in a year.

That is a personal preference thing. The website listed above provide interesting arguments for both options, but in the end you have to make the call. People have been successful from both approaches.
