Actually, our very own Evil Steve recently made an intro-tutorial to DirectX. I've followed it (it's the first step so far) and compared it to my experience of other tutorials, and I'm very happy with it. He goes into detail where necessary, and even though the tutorial might seem long for what you are thaught, you gain a deeper understand as to WHY he makes decisions along the way.

I've used some directxtutorial.com-tutorials, but only to see how one might do something in DX. He codes in a strange mix of C and C++, and checking for errors is missing completely, to mention some. That said, just seeing how a sprite is drawed, for example, could be done by reading those tutorials. Always keep in mind that what it shows is probably not the best way of doing something, and you shouldn't follow the tutorial blindly.

Here's the link to Evil Steves tutorial, enjoy!
