Vertex texture formats

Hi, Which vertex texture format is commonly used for terrain heightmap on modern cards? Older cards only support A32R32G32B32F and R32F. This formats waste memory if I use for heightmap.

As you said yourself, modern cards are not restricted to those two you mention, that were the only hardware-accelerated formats until GF8800 and later (AFAIR Radaeon 2000 series). Unless you need to store other data per height, then a 16 bit fixed point format would probably suffice - LUMINANCE16 or GL_LUMINANCE8_ALPHA8 are popular choices.
