Shadow calculation with iPhone

The powervr chip in the iPhone has no stencil buffer support, so stencil shadows are ruled out. Also, there are no shaders, so shadow maps are ruled out as well. The only alternative then to calculate shadows projected onto the ground. I was wondering if there are any other tricks to calculate shadows in software?

I think you can fake stencil shadows using the alpha channel, I've read that somewhere.
