Before the game even loads, company names appear in a graphics movie (e.g Blizzard and their show-offy ways). Since there are no .avis ever in game folders for protective reasons, how are those stored inside games? How do you use them if you wanted to make your own?

All assets for commercial games are typically packed into some form of archive - for instance the quake engine uses zip archives renamed to .pak. Inside these archives, the video is probably stored in a standard format, such as AVI or MP4.

Bink's video format is also pretty common for pre-rendered video, and of course some of those splash screens aren't actually pre-rendered at all.
