CAL3D Skeleton

Currently, I'm using the CAL3D library for the animations of my game. Currently I'm using 3DS Max to do my modeling, and I'm going off of this tutorial to do my modeling: http://download.gna.org/cal3d/documentation/modeling/tutorial.html The thing I was wondering about the CAL3D library is that do you have to do the biped skeleton in 3DSMAX like it says in the tutorial or can you build your own skeleton from scratch using the bones tool from 3DSMax. Thanks.
