Is there any high-resolution timer (for profiling) available on Ubuntu, other Linuxes, MacOS? Especially Ubuntu is important. Something similar to QueryPerformanceCounter (Windows) would be neat.

The highest precision timer across Unixes is gettimeofday. Specific Unixes might have special, more precise timers, however gettimeofday should be sufficient for reasonable uses. If you want to get very fine-grained (i.e. less than microseconds) profiling, you are probably better off with a real profiling tool (gprof, certain tools of valgrind, oprofile, etc.)
