Performing 3d animations

Hi there, I'm going to work on a 3d flash game and I'll have to do with low poly 3d models. Of course I'd like to perform a minimum of animations of these 3d models. So I was wondering what could be the best options to store and perform animations of 3d models. I mean, should I embed the animations inside the .3ds model, so it's up to the graphic artist or should I perform transformations inside the code? Do you know any good option to solve this problem? My problem is that I've never had to do with 3d models animations so I don't know the possible options, I just know that I'm looking for something very simple ( no biped or stuff like that ) to perform 3d animations of my low poly model. Do you have any ideas? Thanks in advance, Gionathan
