Question about moving in 3D Worlds

Hello, I can''t decide myself. Maybe you can tell me what is the best to move into a 3D World. Is it better to change the D3DXMatrixLookAtLH (moving the camera) or to do translations and rotations? By example in a game like Quake or Unreal, with head vision, which type of mouvement is used? Thanks. Bye bye lucien
