D3d10 - intercepting state changes

Hi all, I recently started reading about d3d9, and even more recently d3d10. In d3d9, in the ID3DXEffect interface there were the Get/SetStateManager funcs, where you could inherit a class from ID3DXEffectStateManager , implement the state-setting function as you like, & intercept any behind-the-scenes state changes the effect did internally. This was a very handy functionality, which I haven't seen anywhere in the documentation for the effect system in d3d10. Does anybody have any idea how to get similar functionality with d3d10? Have I missed something in the docs? Many thanks, Babis
