Hi all, We had a furious discussion in our team, which actually grew up nearly fight, about vertical scrollers. It was all about if the scrollers were dead as a genre or not. Anyway, I’m not going to quote the whole thing. What I’m currently looking for are ways to enhance the vertical scrollers’ gameplay. We’ve already seen in-flight upgrades for weapons/armor, purchasing modes for ammo/new equipment, simultaneous air and ground attacks, two players on one PC play, etc. What else could we put in a vertical scroller? Now I know that sounds a bit lame, compared to all that RPG-super-complicated-talk, but I just can’t help it… Ideas much appreciated! P.s. Just a note: I’m a big Tyrian fan, still playing it in fact, the Tyrian 2000 that is (which was released 1999 actually). Boby Dimitrov boby@azholding.com

Are vertical scrollers dead or not ? Well, i think the answer is yes. Do you remember the last commercial game ( i''m not speaking of sharewares there ) that was a vertical scroller ? That''s really a shame. If a good vertical scroller, with simple 2d ( but lots of effects, nice gfx, smooth animations, good weapons & all ) was released, i''d be the first one to play, and i''m pretty sure a lot of people would too )

Ysaneya:
We talking about the US-only, or the rest of the world?
Asia(Japan specifically) puts out a LOT of commercial Vertical Scrollers.

I think if you want to make a different vertical scroller, you'll need:
A. Plot
B. Choices to A
C. How about reasons for using "bigger and better weapons?"
Like, how about a damage penalty or something, for destroying things
that aren't the enemy? How about a stage or two with YOUR ships
flying in to help, and if you shoot them enough times, or you crash into
them, they die, thus further affecting B. which affects A...Or maybe an
escort mission?

Finally someone recognized that we need some fun-vertical-scrollers ... Technically there''s (almost) no problem to get one working (DirectX, thanks Andre), but what''s most important are the Graphics. For a vertical scroller you really need nice and amazing Graphics, such as on the old Amiga (Turrican,X-OUT anyone ?) ...
About Gameplay: just leave it the old way ... it works and is fun. Only a stronger storyline could be implemented. But that''s not necessary.

Well, from a commercial pov i´d say yes, but we did a sidescroller of the old tradition last year.... It´s just a prototype, but if you like check it out:

www.bunnz.com

we discontinued the project because making money with it would have been rather difficult and the learning curve had evened out anyways...

Hyatus: Talking of Europe. I must admit i''m not very up to date with the consoles universe, but as for the PCs, i haven''t seen a vertical shooter for years. Probably the same for the US. You are saying there are a lot of vertical scrollers in Japan, but are they published by big game companies, or are they "little games" (like sharewares) ?

Btw, you are entitled to your opinion, but if you really think you need a plot or reasons for new weapons in a vertical scroller, you haven''t understood what players are expected from a vertical scroller IMO. Who cares of the storyline ? I don''t want a plot, i want tons of opponents, i want lots of action, i want some boss, i want mega effects and eye candy, i want impressive explosions and destructive weapons. But certainly not a scenario or some damn allies that i''ll have to protect I want a pure shoot-em-up

I assume you''re referring to PCs because consoles still have loads of shooters. On Dreamcast alone I can''t even name all of them, Mars Matrix, GunBird 1 and 2, GigaWing 1 and 2, there''s juts a ton, mostly from Capcom which is from Japan but still, they''re still around on consoles.

SHMUPS ARE NOT DEAD !!!
It''s not because something is not overhyped that it doesnt exist anymore. Of course, no one will talk about it because the genre itself hasnt evolved a lot over the years, but AFAIK SHMUPS are still very much alive. Though apparently there is not a lot in english. The last demo I played a month ago was in chinese I believe, but the game kicked major ass

Hey guys!

I was interesing to read some opinions. So far, as much as I understand, we don''t need any new options/functions in the vertical scrollers - no plot, no allies, no nothing. It''s all up to the tons of enemies and the eye candy. Is that so?

One more question... Could anyone point me to a site with some sort of vertical shooters listing? The platform does not matter, I'm looking for reviews and screens and such...

Thanks!

p.s. ahw, just checked the link in your post, thanks. Anyone else?

What''s a vertical scroller? I think you mean side-scroller or perhaps horizontal scroller. Vertical is up and down, horizontal is side to side.
An no, I don''t have anything to contribute to the thread =P

Hmm. I think there is some confusion, wasnt Turrican a platformer (sidescrolling) and I am sure X-Out was a straight R -Type clone (again sidescrolling) Maybe I am just getting confused..... Basically though, a vertical scroller is like a horizontal scroller, but it scrolls vertically instead of horizontally. But I guess you probably figured that out already... Its difficult to think of a good well known example of the vertical scroller, I think the horizontal ones were more popular.

I think the most important things in any shooter (be they vertical, horizontal or off-axis parabolic scrollers () are:

1. Lots of bad guys
2. Lots of big guns for blowing the bad guys up, preferably guns that liberally spray the screen with cool special effects
3. Big explosions. Need to have good sfx as well.
4. More bad guys
5. Bigger explosions
6. More big guns, more special effects
7. Good pacing - should be fast, very action packed
8. Stupid intro animations that are originally written in japanese and then translated into english as badly as possible, so people in years to come will come across the game, laugh at the bad translation, start numerous forum threads and websites devoted to it and generally take a massive interest in an otherwise forgotten game.

No. But i''m doing a rotationnal scroller Ie. a 360° parallax scrolling (ok i know i''m weird :p). It is focused on multiplayer only. Excepting that, nothing very different than a standard shoot-em-up: tons of weapons, tons of powerups, and huge explosions. Plus a few original things here and there. Did i mention huge explosions ?
