Setting display mode in DirectX8

There are two ways (I thing so) to set display mode: 1. Set mode using DirectX. 2. set mode using Win32 API (ChangeDisplaySettings). What are the advantages in 1st method for DirectX? I''m planning to support also DirectX in my engine. It''d be nice to change mode the same way for both DX and OGL.

Personally, I like the DX way but if you are used to using the Win32 API to set the mode then use that.

If you are unfamiliar with DX then learning to set the mode up using it would help.
