hi folks, i''m doing a small space shooter using d3d8. i render space using point sprites for the stars. my only problem is how to render nebulas properly. currently, i''m doing this by using a sphere with colored vertices and some interpolated noise to get the colors. obviously that doesn''t look good at all i thought about rendering a box with generated textures (using perlin noise). any other ideas? ~dv();

You must use a 3D sprite, this is for particule effect and it looks very nice for space nebula. A 3D sprite is a 2D square who is ever in front of the camera.

(it is also called billboard)

I have coded a simple semi real time nebula texture generator applet.

Here is the link

It is not fast enough to be used real time but something similiar could be used for pre-generating the texture at game time

The applet use''s the mouse x/y as the seed....
