Colliding vectors resulting vector

Hello, It's been a while since I have had a math class so I'm pretty rusty. I can't seem to wrap my head around finding an algorithm to find a resulting vector of two vectors colliding at say a 45 degree angle, each vector may have different magnitudes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Maybe a simple sum of the 2 vectors will do.
Can you make a picture, to show what you expect the "resulting" vector to be ?
