Hello, I am a fresh out of school amateur C++ programmer who wants to program in the game industry one day. I noticed Quake was open source and I figured I could make it a project to dive into modding quake to sharpen my game programming skills. My question is does anyone know any good Quake modding community sites that will help me get started modding Quake? Is there anyone on here who actively mods Quake and is in need of an apprentice? I learn quickly and I am moderately proficient in C++. I have Visual Studio 2008 and Photo Shop.

I would suggest taking a look at the ioquake3 project as a base, its stable and has many bugfixes. You will still need the original Quake 3 game data though, or get it from another project such as OpenArena until you can produce your own.

Just incase you hadn't realised, Quake 3 is written in C and not C++ so don't expect to be using classes and OOP design. I'll also warn that Quake 3 is a hefty chunk of code that will take time to learn, if you're looking for a simpler engine to understand try the Quake 2 engine :)

QuakeSrc used to be a great site but it no longer exists, I wish there was a good archive somewhere.
