This may be a stupid question, but what are the advantages of creating my own sprite system rather than simply using ID3DXSprite? How much faster/slower would it be? And are there any other advantages/disadvantages?

ID3DXSprite is fairly well optimized. The main reason to write your own would be to create a cross-platform solution. If you're not planning on providing OpenGL support, not planning on supporting the Wii, or PS3, then there is little point to making your own, except as a learning experience.
