[win32] chooseColor ( colour :P )

Im just wondering how i would go about making a modeless choose colour window. As far as i can tell. the chooseColor() function is modal. And im wanting to have it so that as the user adjusts the colours in the choosecolor window, the changes are updated in the viewport, (directx shader). I have seen that it comes with a LPCCHOOKPROC lpfnHook callback, but the only message i have come across is the COLOROKSTRING Notification, but that is only if the user clicks ok to end the window. Also, am i right in thinking that as soon as this window opens, the directx window will effectivly pause, and will not update until the modal window is closed again. How can i go about doing what i want?
