just as the title says. i thoght about something. how do i render stuff like beams? i bet as a 3d mesh is probably ugly, and 2d images can look bad too from some angles. what would be the general idea of drawing a 'beam' on the screen?

We render them as sort of "half" billboards. They're long quads, placed along the beam. Then they're rotated on their long axis so that they face the camera as much as possible.

The other technique I've seen was for the light sabers in the Jedi Knight games. That used a collection of densely packed square quads (eg point sprites). They overlapped, and each one had a circular glowing texture, so the combined effect looked like a glowing beam.
