Whats the best turn based strategy game ever?

I love Magic: The Gathering - I'm sure you can recreate card games somewhat based on that with your computer pretty easily (one of the benefits being there is no spatial location you have to keep track).

If you haven't played JA2 in awhile, you should check out the Bear's Pit Forum. Somehow the players got the source code and have been modding it. The latest JA2 is a very different (and better, in my opinion) game from the original.

JA2 is more of a squad tactics game than a strategy game.

For grand strategy games, you've got old 4X favorites like master of orion.

For more traditional TBS games you could look at the HOMM series, or Disciples. I also very much enjoyed Master of Magic when I was younger. Actually, its still a great, intricate game even now. I bought a strategy guide for MOM that contained a great deal of its formulas and charts for each faction and spell. The sheer number of strategies available to overcome those cheating impossible AIs was impressive.

Risk, Monopoly, Checkers, Chinese Checkers, a few more from the distant (although right next door) land of table-top gaming - a very good source to draw inspiration from.

1. Chess (Oldest Strategy Game known to man; invented the overall genre)
2. Risk (Inspired many games from the Wargame and Complex Turn-Based genre)
3. Checkers (Fun to play with family and a game you can practise for ages and still lose to people in the park)
4. Civilisation - The computer game (Revolutionised the whole Strategy genre with accessible and complex gameplay, which promoted its lifespan with the hardcore and regular gamers alike)
5. W40K: Chaos Gate (Got me into turn-based stategy in the "space-world" sense)

Pretty much nothing else after that.

ENNNH! Go beat it by 2 millennium, and is a vastly superior game.

All of the games suggested are good candidates though.

Isn't there a sticky post to answer this question...

Anyway, for me it is Civilization or maybe Alpha Centauri. You may also considering checking out Armageddon Empires as it introduces quite a few neat mechanics whilst being relatively low tech (it's an indie title than ended up being well recognised (I think PC gamer gave it like 95%).

Master of Orion II

What he said.

Seriously, any game without a Black Hole Generator feels like a letdown.

I loved the Fantasy/Panzer General series games except the 3d one. Played Civ alot, Master of magic and Master Orion series, if you like civilization type games.

Final Fantasy Tactics is another of my favorites on console, especially in the beginning of the game (later in the game some things get pretty cheap for your benefit).

I remember that game, I loved that game. Wish I could find a reliable method to play it on modern systems. Last time I tried DosBox for it, it didn't work out that well.

Yeah it was a great game.

I've been thinking of making a clone of it for a while now, just never managed to get around to it. Maybe in a month of so once the university semester is over and i've got some time on my hands, i might have a go at creating it.
