1. Chess (Oldest Strategy Game known to man; invented the overall genre)

Tafl predates Chess by over 1000 years, but isn't nearly as popular. Other forms predate it, too.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is pretty good.
Final Fantasy Tactics is another of my favorites on console, especially in the beginning of the game (later in the game some things get pretty cheap for your benefit).

I remember that game, I loved that game. Wish I could find a reliable method to play it on modern systems. Last time I tried DosBox for it, it didn't work out that well.

Yeah it was a great game.

I've been thinking of making a clone of it for a while now, just never managed to get around to it. Maybe in a month of so once the university semester is over and i've got some time on my hands, i might have a go at creating it.
It's a draw between GalCiv II and Master of Orion.
The first Turn based strategy computer game I ever played was Conflict: Middle East - I could never win, but maybe that was the point...! From there, I played things like "Cosmic Conquest" which lead on to "Stars!" and Master of Orion, etc. I loved all those games.
How about Diplomacy?

hi, what do you mean by saying "recreate". if it means to make a remake of an old game, then i recommend you "Master of Magic", best ever TBS in my opinion.
on the other hand, if you want to play TBS game in Windows XP then my call is "Master of Orion II".

all the best,
