backround.
hey :)
i am working on a space game, and up until now to create a space backround i simply wrapped a giant sphere around the player and placed a space texture on it.
well, it was a cute idea but to be honest it looks awefull. the texture is both overstreched and seems to be sucked into one point of the sphere(and since i dont realy have a 360 space texture that gives an odd result).
now i came to ask, what alternatives way do i have to make a detailed space backround? i thought of adding alot of small "star" bilaboards 3d sprites, but that'll require alot of work to make it detailish and might be costy.
so what alternatives do i have?
You could try using a few different 'sheets' in the background, each at a different depth than the other. Each sheet will be mostly transparent, but can have a few different objects showing up in it. Since the sheets will be at different depths, you will also get some parallax effects from moving around which will add a nice feeling of depth perception.

I've used a cube for this (textured on the inside using six 512x512 textures) and it looked okay (see some of my Solariad screenshots), although there's certainly room for improvement. I suspect my problem was my poor textures. It's worth trying out though.

i'll probably have to skip the parallax effect since the backround is actually space, the stars are so distant that it would seem like they are'nt moving when you move.
but i like the idea of making layers of it :)
any more suggestions?
