Rasterizing a mesh

Hello folks, My challenge is to have the gpu rasterize a triangle/quad mesh into a heightmap. I assume LERPs are very highly optimized and this is exactly what I need. I'll need to get the data back from video memory somehow so I can process it further. Where could I start with this, texture operations, glsl? I really have no idea what I should be looking into. Thanks for any suggestions.
