Distributing a game engine.

Hi there... I apologize if this might sound like a noob question. But what is the best way of releasing and distributing a game engine? Or more importantly, how is it done? Do you give all the source code? Do you make it into a library? Im quite clueless when it comes to these things... thanks.

How do you plan on distributing it? what language is it in?

If it is an open source engine usually you just make source and build instructions available. If it is a closed source thing then you usually provide libraries, dlls and headers(note that is assuming you are using c\c++)

Most programming languages have some concept of dynamically linking to pre-compiled code java has .class files .net has assemblies etc...
