I would very highly recommend avoiding Torque until you're proficient at programming, as it's quite the beast

Nope. Torque is designed in a similar way to Unreal and Source engines. To get anywhere that isn't a simply level edit you'll need a lot of scripting and often source code changes. You should have some coding experience to take advantage of it, specially because it's made with several layered systems that can be unfathomable if you don't have some basic game programming knowledge.

If you want to get a small game done with little coding experience, go with one of the more game-maker-ish packages, or if you want to learn game programming go for stuff like XNA, Blitz Basic and variants.

Now, if you meant Torque Game Builder (aka: Torque 2D), that's a different story, since it can be much friendlier to people who are just starting to code.
