Hi, what engine would work well for a game that would be 3d, but with 2d sprites (like the original mario kart or wolfenstein 3d). It needs to be free and preferably available for linux. Also, I dont want one of those drag and drop game makers, I want something that I can code with. Language doesnt matter

Apparently, grammar doesn't matter either. [lol]

[google] is your friend, although I see many recommend OGRE or Irrlicht.
irrlicht looks nice, any other suggestions?

Also, i didnt know what to google (3d 2d game engine wouldnt work...).

Thanks
Panda3D -- It is a 3D engine but it has support for billboards, which I think is what you want unless you really want a ray-casting engine. It is designed for Python, but can be used with C++ if necessary.
