How to stimulate zooming?

Yes, changing FOV is the right way how to do it.

If you halve your FOV, you get 2x optical zoom.
1/4 FOV = 4x optical zoom, etc.

Changing camera position doesn't make a belivable zoom effect. While zooming in, the perspective distortion is decreasing and the view is becoming more "flat" (because you're lowering FOV); this isn't happening when moving the camera.

Also - good is that zoom based on FOV is really easy to implement. It's good when the right solution is also the easiest, isn't it? :D
