Blending Gradient Help!

I'm attempting to use a fragment and pixel GLSL shader in order to create a gradient effect. I have a 50,000 poly model of a brain that uses a callList to render so I can optimize performance. My goal is to pick a point on the brain, vertex, and show an activation radiating from that point, red near center gradually fading to dark blue and then the brain itself. Any ideas? My shaders now produce pronounced edges from the vertices and no blending whatsoever. Much Appreciated in advance!
