Most popular .NET documentation tool

Recommended Posts

What is the current hot item, for .NET documentation generation (using XML comments)? I had been using Sandcastle & the Sandcastle Helpfile Builder UI, but Sandcastle hasnt been updated for about a year, and I know that some people use NDoc instead. What do you prefer, and why?

Neither. Personally, I prefer to use monodocer and keep this documentation outside the source tree. This buys you flexibility, if you ever need to translate documentation.

Nothing.

There was a time (briefly) when a few people around here used tools like that.

Most programmers on the team that develops the product won't use the generated documentation. It is easier to look at the source directly. It is really only useful if you are distributing your code as a library for other developers, and even then it is only marginally worthwhile.

When I must generate dependency graphs I use Doxygen, which also extracts documentation comments.
