SDL joystick sticks

for some reason, sometimes when i start my program (which uses SDL to get input from my gamepad as a joystick) it thinks the d-pad (ie, joystick axis') is stuck in a direction, even though i haven't touched it. Is there a way i can flush the input on startup so that it doesn't think i'm holding down?
