Particle engine and texture animation

Hi, I need to understand how it would be possible to make a particle engine with an animated texture in hlsl. The texture would have frames of the animation, for example a fire, but my problem is that I don't know how to select the proper frames when I render the texture, maybe shifting, in some way, the texture coordinates?
