Speaking characters

What keywords should I use in a search for anything related to speaking characters in games and what techniques are out there for getting this to happen?

Thanks for that, I had a good read.

I know how the fft works, and I was planning on splitting the spectrum up into its sinusoidal components.

Then I could go and make a recognition system for a e i o and u, and start with that.

Has anyone had a go at implementing this and could share a little bit of info with me?

I guess it would be tricky because an "a" can sound like anything, it depends on who says it and how they say it.
