I am currently having issues with getting my IDirect3DDevice9 to reset properly when the device is lost. I am fairly sure this is because Ive got a surface that isnt being released correctly. Are there any tools I can use to help find what resource(s) arent being freed correctly?

Try checking the return value for the release calls and create a message box that has the information about what is being released, and show it if the release fails.

Is it possible to check what resources are still being held at the time of a device being lost using PIX or the like?

The reason I ask is that I am working with Gamebryo/Scaleform and I think its something that they are holding internally that is not being released.

Enabling the Direct3D debug runtimes will give you loads more debugging information to work from whenever something goes wrong, including on device resets. Try it out and see if the debug spew contains any indications as to what is still alive.
