Tools for a Game Designer

Recommended Posts

I was looking at some job postings for a Designer and I had a couple of questions about what it takes to be a Game Designer and what tools I would need to start learning in order to get to the point where I could get a job. Here is the posting I was looking at: What does that mean? It means that the designer would be doing the following, and more: - Design game levels and all enemies and objects specific to those levels. - Communicate designs visually and verbally to other team members, by possibly creating 2D maps of game levels, 3D roughs of game objects and level, documenting of gameplay functionality and design plans, document expected behavior(s) and functionality of entities - Create detailed specs describing concept, content, assets, rules and behavior(s), constraints, etc. - Evolve and tune game mechanics into fun, intuitive features that are player centric. - Implement designed elements or oversee implementation of designed elements. - Test gameplay and use results to tune gameplay, to make the game more enjoyable What you bring to the table: - Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Knowledge of Maya, Adobe Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite. - Ability to implement gameplay via a scripting system. - Strong communication skills including verbal and written skills are required. Gold Stars for those who have: - Familiarity with a LUA based scripting system. - Experience with 3D level editors. Obviously I need to know Maya, Adobe Illustrator, and Microsoft Office Suite, but what do each of these programs do as far as game design go. I'm pretty sure I know what the first two are for, but I would like a little clarification. Also...what is scripting and where can I get tools to learn to script? Any information about any of this or Game Design in general is great. Thanks everyone.
