Can someone recommend me a good book for game programming? I have 20+ years of programming in C and UNIX... But I want to pick up a new hobby. I want to make a game thats 2d only, and something that works across platforms (i.e. SDL). I don't have any game experience but I consider myself a professional programmer. Can someone recommend a good book? Most of the books I see are written either for DirectX (not cross platform) or C++ (I'd like to try and stick with C when at all possible). A lot also only cover 3D games, and I really only want to start with 2d games, like NES or Super NES type. I'm more interested in writing a 2d game engine very much like "Zelda Classic" Can anyone provide any advice? Thanks.

You might want to look at Game Programming All In One

I never read it, but it does employ a vanilla C cross platform library (Allegro), and I'd therefore think the book is aimed at C programmers (or maybe 'C-with-classes' programmers).
