Just need a little advice, perhaps direction
Im wondering if perhaps im focusing on too many different things in terms of programming right now, and that I may not get anywhere nor perhaps develop skills where its needed.
I finished school a month back. I have a diploma as a Computer Programmer/Analyst. The last two semesters consisted of developing a full application for a client. Our client was another student wanting to do something entrepreneurial. Large scope changes came about, so we more or less took the development phase to where it is now: a good framework for the direction it's going. So im still working on that bit by bit.
Been thinking of making a server using JRuby for kicks. Probably make it a chat system or something. As well as a project using javascript (a lot of research for this one, its kind of a big idea). Also occasionally working on a text rpg in C++ (as you may have seen my odd thread here and there).
Im wondering if perhaps I'm spreading my focus across too many different projects/languages/frameworks. In terms of enjoyment I have fun working on just about all of them. In terms of a job, Ive been primarily applying to web programming. Theres a lot of web java out there, but Im really not interested in that. Im hoping to find a ruby on rails position, as Ive been really enjoying using that framework lately. There's not much for game development up this way. Closest big company would be Ubisoft Montreal, but I cant say id like to move there necessarily.
In short im kind of all over the place, and open for what type of programming/development id like todo for a career. Web, desktop, mobile, games, etc. Im pretty open minded at this point.

If that's what you are wondering, then that's probably accurate. You are showing yourself to be on top of the problem. I'm confident that you can figure out the solution.
Seems to me that you are spreading yourself thin because you aren't sure what you want to do programming wise. You are trying all sorts of things. There is nothing really wrong with that as long as you recognize what you enjoy and why at some point. (Kind of looks like Ruby is a strong starting contender here)
I once spent something like 4 hours playing diablo II going "I know I like to program, but I dont want to work for a bank... what shall I do?" until I went "ohh yeah... duh" and now I program video games for a living.
So yes, you are spreading yourself too thin, but I believe once you know what you like most it will be semi-obvious and you will persue that more than the others. In terms of a job persue what you enjoy most, but of course be realistic if you need to and do something temporary until you find what you want.

In short ruby just makes sense to me, and id enjoy finding myself in a job working with it. I have been applying to jobs like PHP and such as well. In terms of java as a language, I find it great for building desktop apps, but for the web I find it to be a lot of work.
Like you I am a gamer, and find myself always thinking how well certain things work, and what the logic might be. It is something id be interested in for sure, just not much of an opportunity for it in southern ontario. I heard that rockstar is opening an office soon or already has in toronto, so that might be something for me to look at as well.
Thanks for the input :)

ubisoft is also opening a new office in TO.
if you want to get noticed by a big company like this you'll need experience and a way to show off your work. Making a bunch of little games that work will be better then showing a big project that is not done.
