Algorithms.. Grass as in Battle Realms

Hey guys, I was wandering that grass in Battle REalms screens : is it run time generated or pre-rendered? I mean, if they got 3D game, chars and so, so maybe landscape should be 3D as well, so if its true, what kind of algorithm they may use in different types of cover and transition like ones you may see (grass goes to left if there''s ground) and so on.. thanks..
