Video Device Context's & Rendering Contexts

Could some one give me an explanation of what both of these are. I think that a video device context is a structure that holds data to draw on the screen and a rendering context allows openGL commands to be issued to a window. not sure though as i''m currently using glut and started to code stuff over to Win32 Thanks ~Steve~
