2d tilebased graphics

I just need a very simple way of drawing a 2d tile to the screen.. C or C++ of course. I have tried using MFC controls, BitBlt(), without luck.. the only way I can get it working is to create a bitmap and compile it with the rest of the program.. All I want is to be able to read in some tokens from a file, create a tile, and draw the corresponding colors to the screen. Can sombody kick me to a good tutorial for actually drawing the tiles, or be generous enough to supply some code? Thanks
