Is there a way to keepthe lighting you place in 3dStudio when you use the exportPro plugin? is lighting information retained in the PRO file format?

PRO files do not store lights. You could use a modified version PRLight to set the positions. Instead of storing precalculated lighting you could just save the positions in a .lgt file and read them back in your own program.
