I've never really needed anything other than what's provided at php.net. The documentation is thorough, and the user comments are generally pretty useful.
Yeah, php.net will be his friend (and the user comments are invaluable). However, a good book that has helped me a lot when I wanted a hard copy to read would be "PHP and MySQL Web Development" http://www.amazon.com/PHP-MySQL-Web-Development-4th/dp/0672329166/ref=pd_sim_b_6
I learned PHP from http://devzone.zend.com/article/627 . It is a very good, easy to understand tutorial that covers almost everything and it reads like a book.
