When you put resizeble inside the setvideomode() function, does it automatically set the new width and height of your screen variables?

I'm not sure what you mean. It does not affect the size at all. It just enables the user to resize the window. You have to handle those resize events as they occur.

Check the docs. width and height are passed by value, not reference (pointer, since this is a C interface), so there is no way they could be modified in the call (or anytime after it).

Furthermore, read down a little more, and you see:
Quote:
SDL_RESIZABLE: Create a resizable window. When the window is resized by the user a SDL_VIDEORESIZE event is generated and SDL_SetVideoMode can be called again with the new size.
