[java] Confusion with java

Recommended Posts

Swing is Java's flagship standard GUI library, and Sun provides a tutorial trail here.

It builds upon the earlier AWT, but instead of using the underlying operating system's GUI components (and thus varying in appearance from OS to OS), Swing is rendered using the Java 2D graphics library, and thus (normally) looks the same on every platform. Swing may offer a bit too much flexibility, can be complicated and boilerplate code-heavy; but it is a powerful WORA GUI library and offers a lot of powerful and elegant features.

Swing and AWT are both part of Sun's JRE. If you run your application using Sun's JRE, you do not need to do anything extra and can use them right away (assuming you have the JDK installed so that you can compile your applications). For other libraries (SWT for instance) you have to make sure that that library's class files (or the JAR containing them) are on your classpath (set through an environment variable or passed as a command line parameter to the Java VM executable).
