Locking a surface...

Is locking a surface in DDraw necessary at all unless you are planning to plot pixels? i''ve never had to lock a surface yet, so i''m not sure as to what makes it necessary. "You call him Dr. Grip, doll!"

Surface locking is usually used when user wants to directly render to the surface.. for example when loading data from a file directly to the surface.
