Generating Lightmaps

I''m trying to implement my own lightning engine based on lightmaps, as they are said to work best for static geometry. I know how to render them, but I actually don''t know exactly how to generate them. I know the theoretical stuff, but I don''t know how do I generate the actual bitmap. Is there any tutorial which describes the algorithms to do this?
