Hopefully this isn't too off-base for this forum. So... would any new programmers be interested in a mentor? I'm a professional software engineer. I don't work in game development, but I do it on the side (mostly iPhone stuff). But - I am a software engineer, I've been one for 5 years now? I've tried to "give back" by offering to give lectures/talks at high schools/colleges, no one really seems to be interested. But I know that when I was a young programmer, I would have loved to be able to talk to someone who was working in the field. So if anyone is interested, let me know!

I just wanted to applaud you on your idea. There are lots and lots of developers starting out and who needs to get the right mindset you need to developer software, be it games or tools.

I hope you find someone to mentor, someone who understands and appretiates the valuable asset a mentor is, and that you find it gives you something in return.

I'm definitely interested, although right now I have no idea what to ask or talk about. It would be pretty cool to see an online mentor type thing.

Well, ok, that's a lie. I definitely have a lot of stuff I could ask about architecture and graphics (if you do any graphics programming).

Hey! It's awesome that you want to share what you have learned.

You should check out http://www.gamementoronline.org/ and consider becoming a mentor to an aspiring programmer or other person who wants to break into the industry!

Thanks,
Karen

Oh wow, I would love to have some talks with you. I am a programmer that started a year ago, and I always wanted to have someone help me. I want to be a software engineer too.

I'd love to have someone to talk to about all game developing things...

I only started programming (started with HTML and CSS and gradually moved into PHP/javascript and that somehow led on to C++...) 'bout 6 monthes ago but I think I'm progressing alright due to me being in school and all, but I'd like to get into developing games... not to take this thread but SDL or allegro or what? (If there COMPLETELY unrelated sorry, I'm unsure about graphics and I/O with c++ so...)

Also, what languages do you specialise in? I wouldn't like to waste your time if you're only into Java and stuff, I'm only really intrested in C++ and I'm not really sure what else but something graphics-ey or I/O-ey?!?!?...
By the way, if someone would tell me what would be best to learn in relation to graphics and I/O I'd be really grateful!
Sorrrry again for hijacking your thread!!!

I would definitely be interested, I've been teaching myself c++ for a while now and have just started with DirectX, and although there are some good online tutors, I bet having an 'actual' programmer to float ideas with would be immensely helpful.
I will also check out the link posted to see what the deal is there.

I'm interested... any preview of what you might do in your mentorship? I'm usually ok with the beginner stuff but anything harder usually gets me all confused >.>

Hey guys! Wow, I wasn't expecting such a positive response :-)

I'd like to be a resource to people interested in software engineering, whether it's game programming or not. I'm not going to turn people away or have a maximum number of people I'm willing to "mentor", I'd just be happy answering whatever questions you have that I can answer :-)

Is there a way to do a private message on here? If so, send me your contact email, and we can start chatting by email. Maybe even do a small community chat.

Just in case anyone is interested: I work primarily in C#. At the moment I do WPF work at a bank in NYC. My last job was working in C# and C++ doing medical imaging (a lot of WPF, but a lot of native C++ based image processing). I love low level stuff, which is what brought me back to the iPhone, I'm very much enjoying playing around in Objective-C and working with OpenGL.

I think the most valuable thing I can provide is insight into what it's like to be a software engineer. It's a lot more than just writing code ;-)

@KnightAdz, yeah, I love the idea of being able to float ideas around. I would have loved that back in the day when I was starting out programming. That's how I tackle a lot of problems in my day to day job, too, by floating ideas around with coworkers/friends.
