Use the language you either want to learn more of, or is best in. (depending on your goals)
I favour Java, especially if the game should have multiplayer since networking is very simple in Java.

In Java you can use JMonkeyEngine + JGN.

If you need us to walk you through how to make a game like that, chances are you won't be able to. I strongly urge you to take a step back and consider the difficulties you are bound to face. Even for a team of professional programmers it's not something to be taken lightly. Making any form of game is difficult. Making a 3D sports game is very difficult indeed. Add a multiplayer component and you'd better know what you are getting yourself into.

We get many posts like this one, full of hope and optimism. We don't want to crush your dreams - we just think it's better that you face reality now than in a year when your project is due for completion. :)

Please provide us with some more information about yourself: what kind of experience do you have? How many are on the team? What external resources are available? With that information we may be able to guide you to a more suitable project.
