DirectSound: Mommy caught me touching my buffers

I''m wondering if there is any way of playing 16-bit audio without eliminating secondary buffers and having to do the whole primary buffer mix thing. Also, does anyone know if most games actually do this, or do they just play 8-bit .wav files (or something similar) and move on with life?
