OpenGL pixel operations in opengl

well, there are pixel functions in OpenGL, but they''re slow. I think pixel shaders could be could for that kind of detail, but very few people have a Geforce 3. I don''t know about the thermograph effect, but for light amplification can''t you just use OpenGL built in lighting functions?
